A perfectly designed National ID Card for me, which is responsible for accommodating citizen’s identity, must meets demands from both government and citizen. Government’s intention to issue ID card is for documentation, but a well designed card could furthermore establish authority and trust from people. Standing by the side of people, a sense of belonging to this country is crucial. Other than this certainty of identity, people also need to conceive an assurance of respect to every individuals from government. This ReTypography design of ID card attempts to meet the needs of both government and citizen.

ReTypography series focuses on design of typography. Except from necessary reorganization, the information and elements of original editions are not modified. ReTypography design of ID card is based on the assessing edition published by Dept. of Household Registration.

    Problem 1: messy layout

Currently using ID card was issued at the end of 2005. Typeface choice for headers is BiauKai, and for contents is PMingLiu regardless the language’s in Chinese or English. Tracking and line-height change randomly on different spots, and header is pressed disproportionally when longer than two words. Distances between contents and margins on each sides are different, and the shortest one of which is only 1mm long.

Preparing to issue on 2019, the assessing new version of eID card has new elements like chip, barcode and Machine Readable Zone. Considering security issue, new card also puts a copy of mugshot and signature on. Information like parents’ or spouse’s name, military service, birthplace and address is deleted. Instead of BiauKai and PMingLiu, it uses sans-serif typefaces for a brighter look, but the disordered layout with no clear logic is a total mess.

current edition problem of current edition

    Solution

ReTypography version chooses Arphic Heiti (font-weights includes Extra Bold and Medium) for Chinese, and Avenir Next (including Demi Bold and Regular) for English and numbers. According to different important level, from higher to lower ones, font-sizes of Chinese in sequence are 10pt, 6.5pt and 5pt. For English, the font-sizes are 7pt and 5.5pt respectively. The reason to use these two typefaces for Chinese and English is simply for their solid structure and sharpness.

Distance between contents and margin on both right and left sides is 10pt; on top and bottom sides is 12.5pt. All contents’s are guided by repeated horizontal and vertical lines with 5pt spacing.

    Problem 2: name characters

Though length of names of most Taiwanese people are three or two words long, there’re longer ones up to 15 words, according to the record from Dept. of Household Registration. For aboriginals, names with different length variation are common as well. But neither current version or eID card under assessment takes the problem of varying length of names into consideration. Transforming font-size, tracking or proportion of font to fit the recklessly designed space is how it’s been done for years.

longer name problem longer name is an issue for current edition

    Solution

For ReTypography version, name lengths under three words can be arranged beautifully, and there’s also sufficient space for name with 15 words.

When there’re more than three words but less than eight, Romanization name would be moved 5pt down, aligning left with Chinese name. If name length is longer than eight words, contents including Date of Birth, PID NO. and Sex needs to move down for 5pt. The extra space above would be able to accommodate two lines of Romanization name then.

name length ReTypography version can contain up to 15 characters
